SENTIMENTAL SUNDAYS…GRANDMA’S HONEY & GINGER BRAISED STEAK

FullSizeRender (5).jpgJust the smell of this cooking away in the slow cooker reminds me off my Grandma. This is my favourite dish cooked by Grandma, so it is often what she makes us kids for dinner when we go round. Sometimes I’ve been round to my Grandparent’s and Grandma has had this cooking in the background for her’s and Papa’s dinner and it’s made my tummy grumble with jealousy that it’s not for me!

This recipe for braised steak has a slightly oriental taste to it, so is great served with rice. However normally Grandma serves it with new potatoes and veg or as I have here in the picture sweet mashed potato. Also feel free to add other veg to the braised steak, like Lyd’s has done in the other photo.

In a pan heat some oil and brown the steaks on both sides. Then add to slow cooker or oven dish. Add the rest of the ingredients to the dish and cook for 4 hours on high ( or 2 hours at 170C).

Once cooked if you want a slightly thicker gravy, add some cornflour to the mixture and stir until thickened.

Ingredients | Serves 4
4 x 175g braising steak
1 tbsp oil
2 gloves of garlic crushed
2.5cm grated ginger
2 sprigs of rosemary
100g mushrooms
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp clear honey
150ml beef stock

  1. Heat the oil in a pan and add the steaks, fry until they are brown on each side. Then lay on the bottom of the slow cooker pan
  2. Mix the remaining ingredients together and pour over the beef.
  3. Cover and cook for 4 hours.
